Introduction of myself

My name is Tylor Killingsworth. I am in my fourth year as a microbiology major. I really don't have much time to do much except study. My major keeps me pretty busy most of the time. I plan to enter grad school after my fifth year at OU. After grad school I would like to work for some sort of biotech company or possibly the CDC. Also I plan to eventually obtain my doctorates degree. I am an active member of Sigma Chi. My hobbies include hunting, fishing, and target shooting. I like most things outdoors. The last time that I actually enjoyed watching TV or playing video games was when the original Super Mario was on the Game Boy Color. Other than that I don't watch too much TV or movies unless it's in a social setting and I'm forced to. I read the new everyday but other than that I don't do much in my spare time indoors. I have one perfect dog named Jasper. He is three quarters lab and one quarter Australian shepherd. He enjoys going on hunts and playing in any size water hole he can find. I am from Checotah, OK (yes that is where Carrie Underwood is from). It is located two hours straight east of Oklahoma City on Interstate 40. It is a very small town of around 4,000 people residing in it. It was a huge culture shock for me coming form a school where the entire high school is the size of my freshmen general chemistry class. Over the summer I lived back home and worked at a cardiology clinic as a physicians assistant for two months through an internship opportunity provided by the Creek Nation. I hope to enjoy this semester as much as I can and attend every home game of the Sooners and future Big 12 champions!

  1. Hello Tylor. Hopefully your semester is starting off well. I know as a senior I can definitely begin seeing the light at the end of the tunnel! I have never been to Checotah, Oklahoma and I am from south Oklahoma City, but I can relate to the shock of attending such a large university. The high school I attended had roughly the same number of students as the chemistry courses and all I remember thinking was that our freshman class had over four thousand students. I definitely respect that you want to become a part of the CDC. Hopefully this semester goes well for you.

  2. Hey Tylor! I think it is so cool that you read the news everyday; that is the habit I want to start this semester! I hate not knowing what is going on when people are talking about current events and I think just keeping up with the news would help so much! The only thing I know about Checotah, OK is that its where Carrie Underwood is from, lol, but I have always wondered what I would be like to grow up in a small town (I am from Edmond, OK).

  3. Hey Tylor!
I'm glad you have your priorities in order and plan on attending every OU home game this year. BOOMER haha. I've heard about a lot of people experiencing culture shock at first when they come to a big campus like OU. We're not just big for Oklahoma, we're so much bigger than so many universities across the nation. Good luck during your senior year!!

  4. Australian shepherds are such great dogs, Tylor! Maybe you can find a picture of him to include here in your post... and he could even be a character in a storytelling post - there are some great stories about dogs from all over the world, including quite a few dog stories there in the UnTextbook. And that is so cool that you got to do an internship sponsored by the Creek Nation. We don't have a Creek unit in the class, but there is a FANTASTIC book of Creek folktales online here if you are maybe interested in doing that as a project for class!

  5. Tylor, it was awesome to read about you! It seems like you really have everything planned out. I hope it all goes great for you! How did you react about Carrie Underwood? I am sure it was something big for the town or maybe that's the way that media portrays things like that. I am not a big fan of her but she is extremely talented. I can definitely relate to shock culture. I expected my gen chem class to be big but I never imagined that many people. It seems like your semester is going good so far. I wish you the best!

  6. Tylor, my cousin graduated from here not that long ago with a degree in microbiology. He absolutely loves his job now. He works in a lab in Austin, Texas. He sends us all kinds of cool stuff to look at that he has tested out. I hope you enjoy as much as he does! I wish I had the patients for a dog because yours sounds absolutely adorable, but work and class don't really allow that to happen. I hope you find some free time! Good luck!

  7. Hi Tylor, it's very nice to meet your acquaintance. I'ma Bio major and we're kind of on the same track so I completely understand what you mean by saying you don't have much time to do much except study. Where would you like to go to grad school? It's cool that you're from the same town as Carrie Underwood! Did you ever get the chance to meet her before or even after she became famous? Good luck this semester.

  8. Hi Tylor, it's nice to meet you. It was nice to read about you as I found someone who shares my belief of OU being Big 12 Champions this year (and hopefully National Champs :)). I hope you are having fun and doing well with Microbiology as I heard it's really hard. Hope you achieve everything that you have planned for! Again, very nice to meet you and BOOMER SOONER!!

  9. Hi Tylor, I enjoyed reading your introduction post. I can not believe that you are able to have gone that long without giving into the television addiction. I find that super impressive as my tv is basically always on. I can't seem to focus without the background noise. I always love to hear about people's pets, especially when they are perfect! I have a mastiff/lab mix and he is the best. Also, kudos for going the microbiology route, I know that it is probably not easy ever.

  10. Hi Tylor! I am also from a very small town where one of my science classes here at OU was the size of my entire high school! I think it would be awesome to work for the CDC. That sounds like it would be a very interesting job. I have two dogs and one is a lab and the other is a blue heeler/Australian shepherd mix. Good luck this semester! It was nice meeting you!

  11. What's up Taylor, name's Michael. I'm hundreds of miles above Checotah from Tulsa Oklahoma and I went to big ol Union so we come from contrasting backgrounds but it's always interesting to hear another persons story, especially from those who heavily contrast. I agree with you on the TV things. Who needs it ha, I'm usually outside playing ball or working out or studying. The college life. Stay up bro.

  12. Hey Tylor,
You are a brave soul majoring in microbio haha something that I definitely could not do. I can also safely say that I have never heard of the town you are from haha I'm from Dallas so I'm not really used to small town but I feel like they're probably better an big cities sometimes!

  13. Hey Tylor! Wow, you sound like a very dedicated student. I don't know that I'd be able to go to school for that long! I think it's cool that you were able to be a physicians assistant over the summer.

If you're going to brag about your dog, we need pictures! It was nice to get to know you a little bit. I hope your semester is going well!

  14. Hi, Tylor!

I do not envy you at all for your major! I cannot even imagine how tough that must be. I bet this class is a welcome change for you.

I also love to hunt and fish. Did you go this weekend for the opening of bow season?? We spent all of Friday and Saturday in the woods without seeing a single buck. Hopefully it will go up from here!

I love that your dog is part Aussie. I have a beagle that is my best friend, but we also have aussies that I love just as much! They're fantastic dogs.

I hope your semester is going well, and I hope you make it out to the woods even though you're so busy with classes. It was nice reading your post.

  15. Hi Tylor!

I'm pretty happy you put a map of Oklahoma with your hometown marked! I love hearing about where people are from in Oklahoma, but I have no clue of where that it in relation to where I am.

Microbiology is a beast I hear. I have a few friends studying it and they seem so busy all the time. Kudos to you for managing that on top of maintaining a blog! That is super impressive.

It was nice meeting you and I hope your semester continues to go well!

  16. Hey Tylor,

One of my best friends is a microbiology major, too so I understand how time consuming that can be! It sounds like you have awesome plans in your future. Also, I couldn’t agree with you more about loving outdoor activities. That’s my favorite, too. I like to do different things outside but I still love being outside. I am also obsessed with Austrailian shepherds. I used to have an Australian shepherd and blue heeler mix and he was the best dog! Have a great semester and it was awesome to meet you!

  17. Hey Tylor!

Hey I understand the struggle as a microbiology major! it is a lot of work. I have a lot of friends who are a microbiology major as well. I really like how you are very unique in the sense that your goals are to work for a biotech company or the CDC. Usually most people are pre-med from what I have seen which, is not a bad thing. So props to you in being different and I wish you the best of luck in your future goals. I Hope your semester is going well!

  18. Hey, Tylor,

It’s great that you already know what you want to do. And you’ve already been able to work in your field – that’s awesome to already have that kind of step up. Coming from a town with only 4,000 people to OU must have been difficult, but it’s great that you’ve stuck with it! I hope all continues to go well for you this semester!

  19. You really have everything figured out! I don’t know specifically what I want to do once I’m out but what I do know is in some way, I would like to work for SeaWorld. You’re a good man for planning on going to all of the home football games! The football games are the highlight of my college experience! I hope you’re right about our boys becoming Big 12 Champions!

  20. Hello Tylor,
I'm glad to see someone that knows what they are doing with their life! I have one more semester left and I still have no clue what I want to do. I also come from a small town in eastern Oklahoma. It was a big adjustment coming to OU, but it was worth it! Great to meet you and I can't wait to read your stories!

  21. I know where Checotah is!!! It's a pit stop on the way to Tulsa! Just kidding. I'm also from a very small town but no one famous came from Dale, Oklahoma. As a biology major, I've taken a few mbio classes and they can be tough. Kudos for making it your major and chugging through it. It's a very interesting subject. I think its great that you want to go into research. There are a lot of opportunities out there and I'm sure you will find something you love.

  22. Pretty funny that we grew up not very far from each other and we meet the last week of class. I bet you did like my storytelling post. I should have reversed roles but I was in a hurry! Ha! I’ve met people that are from surrounding towns but not anyone from Checotah. Nice to meet you! I hope you find time to watch some TV over break.

  24. Hi Tylor,
Nice to finally meet you! I can't believe this is the last week of the semester and there are still peoples intros that I have not read. I am from Moore, Oklahoma but have only driven through Checotah once traveling to the North East corner of the state. Its the end of the year and we are Big 12 Champs so your wish came true! Hopefully we continue through the playoffs and make it to the National Championship game!
